Canwood Summer Youth Program...continued

For ‘In and Around the Community’ the kids spent one afternoon at the Mini Golf in Canwood where they had loads of fun. Another day we had went back to the Canwood Public Library where we got to play with all kinds of different Lego and test out 3D pens. To end off this busy week we took a stroll around town and stopped and had a picnic in the park beside the Credit Union.

During ‘Where in the World’ week the kids got to travel to four different places including, Mexico, France, Africa and Antarctica. All of the crafts in this week were tied into the themes of each day that included things such as sombreros, Eiffel towers, safari animals and igloos. The kids also took a trip to Whispering Pine Place where they helped the residents make and design door hangers for their rooms.

‘Anything Goes’ was another fun filled week. Here the kids made pirate masks, secret agent badges and a few different science experiments and even had a pajama day. We had two field trips this week, which were to Memorial Lake and Shellbrook Swimming Pool. In Shell Lake we had a picnic lunch and played on the playground before heading over to the Mini Put for an exciting afternoon of golf and ice cream sundaes. Our final trip to the pool was a success, the kids had another fun afternoon hanging with their friends and splashing around.

For our seventh and final week of Summer Youth we went on several field trips. We began the week with a trip to Whispering Pine Place where the kids played a few skill building games with the residents. Following through the rest of the week we stopped in at the Affinity Credit Union in Canwood where the ladies gave the kids a tour of the bank vault and provided a hot dog lunch. Next, we went to the Legion Hall where Bob Thompson and Jerry Ziegeman gave the kids a tour of the hall as well as a few artifacts from the World Wars. Finishing off the week we went to the Canwood Regional Park for a picnic lunch and an afternoon of playing at the park. Unfortunately, due to the weather we were unable to go on our farm tour to the Wreford’s Farm.

The Summer Youth Program would have not have had such a successful summer if it wasn’t for all of those who helped. A big thank to our program sponsors Canada Summer Jobs, Community Initiatives Fund, Saskatchewan Rivers School Division No.119, Canwood Public School, R.M. of Canwood No.494, Village of Canwood and Canwood Elks Lodge #183. Also, thank you to Whispering Pine Place, Canwood Public Library, Canwood Mini Golf, Affinity Credit Union Canwood Branch and the Canwood Legion for taking time out of their busy schedules to let the kids attend the field trips and activities. Thank you to the parents for driving and chaperoning field trips and bringing their kids to the program day after day. And finally, the kids! This program wouldn’t be running without you and we hope to see all of the kids back again next summer!
